Compliance with infection prevention and control measures and appropriate antibiotic prescribing practices should be an integral part of the good clinical practice and standards of care. However, both infection prevention and control measures and antibiotic prescribing practices in surgical patients are often inadequate and remain a great challenge. Today antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become a real public health priority worldwide. Despite the complexity of the problem and the need to combat it by a “one health” strategy, healthcare plays a central role in preventing the emergence and spread of AMR. AMR is a natural phenomenon that occurs as microbes evolve. However, human activities have accelerated the pace at which microorganisms develop and disseminate resistance. Incorrect and injudicious use of antibiotics and other antimicrobials, as well as poor prevention and control of infections, are contributing to the development of AMR. AMR poses a global challenge. No single country, however effective it is at containing resistance within its boundaries, can protect itself from the importation of multidrug resistant organisms through travel and trade. The global nature of AMR calls for a global response, both in the geographic sense and across the whole range of sectors involved. Leading international organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), acknowledge that collaborative practice is essential for achieving a concerted approach to providing care that is appropriate to meet the needs of patients, thus optimizing individual health outcomes and overall service delivery of health care. The use of such approaches reinforces the concept that each one brings with them their particular expertise and is responsible for their respective contributions to patient care. The Global Alliance for Infections in Surgery is an independent alliance promoted in 2016 by the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES), aiming a global approach to promoting research and education in the field of infections across the surgical pathway, supporting a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and a cohesive approach.

Global Alliance for Infections in Surgery in collaboration with Surgical Infections Society, Surgical Infections Society – Europe, World Surgical Infections Society, Infections in surgery ACADEMY, Global Sepsis Alliance, World Alliance Against Antibiotic Resistance, Health First Europe and World Society of Emergency Surgery is organizing a free webinar meeting on December 11.

The webinar will be free of charge and accessible to all worldwide.

Speakers around the world will share knowledge and awareness about infections across the surgical pathway. It’s our intent to inspire a global movement promoting universal standards of care in preventing and managing infections across the surgical pathway that can be followed by all of us over the world.

The webinar meeting will be held on December 11, 2019 (from 12:30h to 19:00h UTC) –  free of charge and completely online, enabling participation from all over the world. Over the course of webinar meeting experts will discuss the main aspects of prevention and management of infections across the surgical pathway.

All participants will be able to follow the interactive on-distance meeting via a PC, Mac, tablet or smartphone, and see and hear the speaker(s) thanks to audio and video feeds. No apps are needed.
